Kid-Approved Vermont: A Summer Day in the NEK

Looking for a day trip packed with big views, great eats, and a splash of adventure? Our family getaway to Burke Mountain, East Burke village, and Lake Willoughby had it all—scenic hikes, riverside play, mountain bikers, and a refreshing swim to top it off.

Summit Burke Mountain

We started our day with a hike to the summit of Burke Mountain—a short trek that rewards you with stunning panoramic views stretching from Vermont’s Northeast Kingdom all the way to Canada. We took the scenic toll road up in our car, as we were short on time and endurance. The summit trail from the toll road parking area is very family-friendly, with a sweeping vista view just steps from the lot. It winds through shady forests, over roots and rocks, and took us about 15 minutes to reach the top. There, we soaked in the scenery and let the kids roam around. The fire tower was under maintenance when we arrived, but we will reach those heights on our next visit! From the lot you can also access a network of trails to take you further down and around the mountain.

Want to try mountain biking? Thursday through Sunday you can explore Burke’s pump tracks and downhill mountain bike trails and scenic lift rides will take you over the action for an aerial view. Plus, the Burke Hotel’s View Pub is open lunch over the weekend.

Family tip: Bring snacks and water, and let the kids lead the way—it’s a great confidence boost for them!

Lunch & River Fun at The Orange Rind

Next stop: The Orange Rind in East Burke. What an awesome discovery! This casual but cute riverside spot is an absolute gem for families. While the grown-ups savored fresh sandwiches and drinks on the expansive outdoor patio, the kids splashed in the shallow river right beyond the lawn—keeping cool and entertained. Picnic tables are also perched on the grassy riverbank, shaded by trees, with the soothing sound of water trickling by. It’s the ultimate combo: good food, happy kids, and a place where everyone can relax.

We watched a steady stream of mountain bikers roll by from the famous Kingdom Trails, many stopping for a bite or drink, adding to the fun, energetic vibe. Village trails can be accessed right from the restaurant.

Kid tip: Pack water shoes or sandals—your little ones won’t be able to resist the water!

Swim & Picnic at Lake Willoughby

With full bellies and happy hearts, we loaded up the car and took the scenic 30-minute drive to Lake Willoughby, often called Vermont’s most beautiful lake—and for good reason. The drive itself is stunning, winding through forested hills and farm valleys, but nothing quite prepares you for the dramatic arrival at the lake’s southern shore.

Nestled between the towering cliffs of Mount Pisgah and Mount Hor, Lake Willoughby looks like it was plucked from a postcard. We found a shaded beach near the South Beach, a family-friendly spot with soft sand, a gentle shoreline, and views that seem to stretch on forever.

The kids jumped right into the cool water after a hot day and parents were quick to follow. The clear blue lake is one of the most inviting in Vermont, and definitely at the top of our list.

Parent tip: There are bathrooms and some shady spots at the south beach. Bring sunscreen, floatables, and plenty of water.
