Details
Mad River Glen, one of Vermont's first major ski areas, was founded in 1947 by a small group of investors. Heading up that group was Roland Palmedo who wanted to create a ski area for truly dedicated skiers, with a minimum of commercial interests and amenities. The Single Chair began operating in 1948. Also completed at that time were five trails and a small base lodge (still referred to as the "basebox"). Over the next few decades, 3 double chairlifts and a rope tow for a children's learning area, and many new trails were added. However, the general character of the area changed very little. It is a unique place where skiing is a sport, not an industry.
In 1972, the ski area was bought by Truxton Pratt, and after his death shortly thereafter it was passed on to his wife, Betsy. It remained relatively unchanged until she sold it in 1995 to a group of skiers who formed a cooperative to own and manage the ski area.
Ski It If You Can Ski School offers a wide variety of programs for children ages 4 and up. Programs range in ability from beginners to kids who want work on freeskiing, race development and telemark skiing. Additionally the are programs over the holidays.

- February 9, 2015"It is a great atmosphere for families. They are dependent on weather which has some pros and cons. Less money spent on snow making keeps prices affordable. You have to be flexible or plan carefully. The mad card will give flexibly. When Mother Nature cooperates, this place is Eden. We go there every year. We try to go a few times each season. "- Glb
- September 15, 2010"There is NO better place to ski if you are an expert skier and love ungroomed trails. The only downsides MRG is highly weather dependent as they make almost no snow and, if the skiing is good, lines are insanely long on the weekends. But this is the best, affordable skiing anywhere in the country when the conditions are good."- native VTer
- December 11, 2008"There is so much that is GREAT about this mountain! For starters, kids 12 and under ski free when a parent spends as little as 179 for a Family Mad Card. You must sign up for this deal by Oct. 15, but it's one of the best deals around for kids. The other fantastic thing about Mad River is it's natural snow and terrain. You won't find tons of snow guns or large boulevards of corduroypacked snow. You'll find plenty of trails that are designed and maintained to optimally hold the snow that mother nature delivers. And despite the bumper stickers Ski It If You Can, there is something for everyone here. The mountain couldn't be more kidfriendly. There is only one lodge the basebox and all trails return to the base box. The learning slope with handle rope tow Callie's Tow operates at a speed that any I really mean ANY youngster can handle. Everything at Mad River is priced fairly. And then there are some unbelievable deals. The all time best is Roll Back the Clock Day when prices for lift tickets fall back to the 1948 price of 3.50. If you've never tried Mad River Glen, mark January 27, 2009 on your calendar and GO!"- jspasyk
