Founded in 1982, Turtle Island Children’s Center is Central Vermont's leading early childhood school, serving over 70 children from 55 families. Its nature-based curriculum emphasizes environmental education, social-emotional growth, and hands-on learning. Turtle Island’s emergent curriculum is guided by children’s interests, encouraging exploration and discovery. Nestled between North Branch Nature Center and Hubbard Park, the site has been integral to fostering a love for nature and creativity among children since the center moved to Elm Street in 1990.

"The teachers are wonderful. The exterior space and the local adventures are well designed and utilized. The interior space is adequate, but old and prone to functionality failures. The center has closed multiple times related to plumbing hazards and maintenance issues. The administration also closes classrooms and the whole center frequently more than twice per month for staffing deficiencies, premature weather concerns, and to host staff meetings. Its hours are only 8-3:30 and they schedule at least 5 5-10 day closures for vacations per year. In using this center since 2019, weve had less than 8 full weeks M-F of care without some closure complication or other. In summary, when its open, its great, but this is not a reliable place for childcare."
