Think Like a Squirrel! @ Rock Point Commons

Exploring the anatomy of wild nuts and the animals that eat them.

Fall is a plentiful time for harvests of all kinds, fruits are ripening, late season vegetables are ready to be picked, and nuts are falling to the ground, just in time for many animals to eat and collect as they prepare for winter. Let’s pretend to be squirrels collecting nuts, learn the skills it takes to find the good ones, and crack ‘em open!

Come to the Rock Point visitor center on Saturdays from 10:30 am to 11:45 am for a fall foray into the lives of nut-eating critters. Learn about the anatomy of some common wild nuts and the skills and tactics used by squirrels and other animals to find, collect and dissect them. Collect your own nuts or fruits that have fallen from the trees out at Rock Point, and bring them to the visitor center to dissect them!

This activity starts and ends at the visitor center, with the option to walk outside on the nearby trail or gravel road to find nuts. Participants can decide how far to walk, or can opt to stay inside and use the materials prepared by Rock Point Center. We will provide all necessary materials and tools. The indoor portions of this activity will be facilitated by a Rock Point Center guide.

Accessibility Information: Parking is available at 20 Rock Point Road, a short walk on a gravel path directly in front of the visitor center. Seating and bathrooms are available inside the center.
